Find Fashion: The Art of Layering

Winter is the ultimate time to master the Art of Layering. It helps you push the style envelope while using garments you love. To increase your layering confidence before you commence Winter shopping at Belmont Forum, read below.

First up, accept that layering is a practical way of dressing. With the Australian climate, you can be shivering at 8am then sweating by midday. Make sure your bases are made of light layers such as t-shirt and shirts- you can find these at any of our menswear retailers such as Cotton On, Connor and Ed Harry. As you start to add your jumpers and jackets, remember that each layer must be suitable to wear on it’s own- don’t go covering up any stains or holes!

Secondly, the hem of your final layer should be longer than the others. For example, if your coat hemline finishes further down than your sweater and shirt, it will result in a more polished and finished look.

Thirdly, don’t be afraid to mix your colours. As seen above, the colour palette is neutral but interesting when put together. Fail-proof colour combos include:

  • Khaki + Camel + Indigo Denim
  • Khaki + Camel + Beige
  • Indigo Denim + Beige + Brown

Lastly, if prints seem too scary- use them as your very first layer! This way it will only be your collar or sleeve peeping out. Another way to tone down prints is to wear a solid colour over the top. For example, a printed shirt then a black coat.
